Just another Terminator conspiracy? Or do you think a robot will end up with your job?
The past century has seen an exponential growth in technology, past all expectations. Despite the best efforts from the Industrial Revolution, technology has continued to grow rapidly and artificial intelligence (AI) is feared to become a real-life “Terminator”.
Recent reports produced by Oxford University and Deloittes estimate that around “35% of existing UK jobs are at risk of automation in the next 20 years.” With this information the BBC has developed an interactive website that tells you whether or not your job is under threat.
So, if it comes down to it, how would you rise against the machines? Like all threats in life, you can choose to ignore the problem until it’s too late, or, prepare to adapt.
Here are three tips on how to start preparing for the inevitable “robot threat”:
1. Become and STAY tech-savvy
Being tech-savvy is a sure way to increase productivity, but the world of technology is constantly changing and being tech-savvy these days means more than just having an active social media profile. It’s about keeping up-to-date with the latest trends in technology and being an early adopter of these technologies.
Start by asking questions - there are countless blogs, forums and social networking sites at your disposal, where you can ask just about anything about anything! Check out some online tech communities or even better, look for some technology events happening in your area and pop your head in.
Coca-cola has compiled a list of products you can use to help keep up-to-date with the latest trends and updates in technology. Do your research and stay in touch with changes happening in your industry.
2. Speak their language
HTML, CSS, PHP, ABC (ok not ABC) are all examples of different languages or programmes spoken by robots and machines. Stay ahead of the game and safe-guard your career by learning the basics of these languages.
Make use of the recent boom in free online education - why not start a course that teaches you the basis of a computing language, then, once you’re comfortable with your new skills, add to them with more advanced languages and coding techniques. Don’t be afraid to take the plunge and learn something new.
3. Upgrade your skill-set
Don’t let yourself become redundant. Lots of companies have a continuous professional development (CPD) programme in place that allows their employees to learn new skills whilst working and maintain professional relevance. If you’re on the job search, keep an eye out and ask about CPD opportunities or find out if your company has one, and use it!
